It frightens me to consider there's a whole class of people who are smart, funny, have unassailable taste in music and read just enough to be intelligent without coming off bookish, that are divided from me by no more than a degree or two of relation--they're the boyfriends and girlfriends of my own friends--who dress in clothes I wouldn't know where to buy and speak...

A Piece of the Storm
by Mark Strand
From the shadow of domes in the city of domes,
A snowflake, a blizzard of one, weightless, entered your room
And made its way to the arm of the chair where you, looking up
From your book, saw it the moment it landed. That's all
There was to it. No more than a solemn waking
To brevity,...

I wish I was "less" better at insulting people. It's becoming a curse - I'm offending people left & right recently. I made a grown man blanch last night just by introducing myself. I had never seen such a perfect example of 'blanching' before. He looked terrified & made haste.
Damn, I thought. What is this power I've got? I'm just a simple steel town girl on a Saturday night, looking for the fight of her life......and taking no prisoners. Mebbe that's the problem?
(No, really! I swear it's not a threat!)

hey dog how are ya? I'm just sitting here with bleach on my head, typing away in other folks journals... gotta keep my mind off the burn of the bleach..... how have you been?
Dear black-haired girl who was in my store,
When you walked up to me in your supertall boots, dressed in black like the night on stilts, asking me for a magazine just as The Dead Milkmen's "Punk Rock Girl" came on, that totally made my day. Thanks.
Sincerely,

i hope you know that your comments are seriously one of the highlights of updating.
in fact, you've even sort of almost convinced my boy to join the site. YOU ARE A GOLDEN GOD.
he's all: "You mean normal guys....funny people....CANADIAN PEOPLE like SG???"
He has a hard on for Canada the size of most people's for Al.
Yes, an english major just constructed that sentence. Poorly.

Somehow, without my noticing, much of the hair that used to be on my head can now be found on my face.
(Not in the "going bald" sense: just that I cut my hair a bit shorter and then grew a beard a month later. If I do say so myself, it's a good deal more fetching than Voltaire's pointblank diagnosis makes it sound.)

I have never, ever turned on the heat in a place where I have contributed to the PG&E bill, showcasing my incredibly cheap nature. I will pile on the blankets or sweaters until it's hard to move, but I'll be damned if I'll pay for heat. But, then again, I live in San Francisco. Not exactly known for soul-freezing temperatures.
You know, that journal entry I just wrote was lame, so I'm replacing it right away with this.
My Mom and The Chinese
Cool band name or not? I say cool; my girlfriend says not.
Addendum:
"Are you going to the 17 Katies show tomorrow? It's totally going to rock."
"I don't know, I've seen them before and their last CD kind of sucked."

Damn school keeping me from really enjoying the internet!
I've signed up for a management training course--how professionally developmental of me. Why did I do this? Wasn't the plan to get a cushy government job in communications and bid retail a fond farewell? Yes, it was the plan, and to some extent it still is. But let's be realistic: I've never worked for the government before. I know nothing about working for the government,...

Not a lot of time to spend right now. I want to get in a good hour on this stupid story I've had on the go for a while now. I've got a title and a beginning, and a cast of characters, but they don't seem to be going anywhere, and I want them to get to something that would make the title make some...

Alot of people don't peg me as a bondage chick but I kinda have to be... I do escape artistry.... It's really cool....I can get out of alot of positions... I'm also really into the fetish culture... It can be alot of fun....
Tomorrow's my brother's birthday. He'll be 23. There's not much I can tell you about him: I know him well, we're close, but most of what I know can't be spoken. We're in many ways very similar, and in just as many we're total opposites: our mom's endlessly amused by how similar these two completely different children of hers can be.

hmm...siblings. I tended (still tend?) to be the quiet, sarcastic, 'brilliant' lit-geek girl. my younger sister was the semi-rebellious vegan activist one - she currently is off on another of her random trips somewhere. South Africa was the last adventure, and before that, Russia and Siberia. Yes, I'm a bit jealous.

Dear Boss,
Remember how you gave me all that time off the week of New Year's, and said you'd punch me in for a dummy shift just so I'd be paid for a full week's work? Well, that was really cool of you--unnecessary, mind you, as I would never expect in this industry of retail to be given time off without using vacation days, let...

Like Uncognitive says: I have a real job and insurance. I also live in an apartment that is far nicer (read: has very high ceilings, is old) than any of my friends, such that they come over and say "Hey, you've got a really nice apartment" once, and never come over again because they hate reminding themselves of how paltry their hovel is in comparison to mine. I think of as payback for when I lived in a railroad apartment above a drug dealer and everybody always wanted to come over and hang out.
Maybe you should alternate copies of the Communist Manifesto, Kapital, and, I don't know, maybe some Locke in your window displays. Would your boss think that's coming across too strong?

I've always had an interesting relationship with the idea of "selling out". I've been a part of bands I didn't believe in because I wanted to be onstage. I've sat around in a band meeting figuring out what style of music we should write more of based not on where our influences were leading us, but on what our audience was responding to. I have day job where I apply my talents to create the art that the company wants me to make.
Granted, I'm very lucky that I work for a wonderful company that affords me a great deal of creative freedom. But at the end of the day, I know that no amount of me loving something I've done will override the brass not digging it. And I'm totally at peace with that.
A lot of my friends have thrown the term 'sellout' around, aghast at the fact that I can so easily make that peace, particularly given some of the restrictions on your creative output when you're playing in the big leagues.
I see their point, but I consider myself a success, and not a sellout. Both success and selling out, I believe, only exist in any meaningful way between you and your art. (And you can extrapolate outwards into the more traditional commercial avenues.)
I admit - I'm a shameless capitalist who wants to be very rich
But I don't think I've made any compromises I don't believe in.

No comments for 5 days: that's gotta be a record. Nobody's fault but mine, I suppose. I was going to update this several times this weekend, but every time I stopped myself and decided to save the words and effort for other things. There are just so many hours I can spend in this chair, you know.

canada is big. like, high-point-John-Goodman-big. and in actuality, i would have had no goddamned idea where in canad-ia you were, since your profile is mysterious and vague in its pinpointery. can you tell i've been rereading a lot of Wodehouse recently?
i hereby accept your offer, and make a counter-offer to train it up to trekkerville sometime in the future when i'm less bounded by the boyfriend's parents as chauffeurs.

I really adore the twenties and thirties, but really the tweties.... I even have some vintage clothing from that era, but most of my vintage stuff is from the fifties.... when I cut my dreads off I want to be able to style my hair like mae west.......
Wednesday, huh? Poetry again. This time it's Ken Babstock, another Canadian. This one's from his first book, Mean. The last lines have become a mantra I mutter under my breath when work tests my patience.

I'm just amazed that fruitcake manages to combine two concepts that are quite delicious on their own (cake and fruit) and wind up with an end product that's never delicious, ever.

As to what our buddy Skryche said about being 'privy' - as in, you are privy to your ways (& means!), my dear, because Thou Are Smart Too.
Yeah, this dude starting attacking my husband & he wound up in my inbox - so I wrote to him "This is My email account. For the future, please wait until your coke down wears off before writing to my husband. XO, EMF" Apparently he had a real problem with my saying that.....hence, the 'skank' attack. My husband shook him down & was apologized to by this nutcase. He refused to apologize to me because "She said I was a coke head!" Sob, sniff sniff. I think I hit a nerve!
This is the only balloon story that I know.
Oh, about your journal entry, I believe that everybody feels that way, sometimes, deep down. Chin up, you are not alone...
