One of my strongest memories is of summer rain on the road, the smell of bitumen. In Sydney summers are fucking hot, up to 45C that's 113F. When I was a kid we'd go skin diving in the bay and swim with the schools of fish. They'd be Yakkas in the mix (that's Aussie slang for sharks) and occasionaly dolphins and whales heading down south. You never get close to the whales or dolphins they were quick fuckers. You'd spend the whole afternoon diving, there was a deep underwater cliff with a massive blue Grouper we called Billy, (he was the local pet, all the locals knew Billy) he was massive about 1.5 metres, and friendly as fuck he was like a dog, seriously, we all looked out for him and made sure no one tried to hurt him. sky blue with dark blue zebra stripes. Anywho like clock work at about 5:30 in the arvo it would fucking start pouring. You'd see the steam rise off the roads and smell the bitumen. Ever since, whenever I smell that it brings me back to my childhood and those great times we had diving in the bay. It's funny how just a smell can bring all that up!
