i'm totally sickened by the celebrity dick-riding culture too. i read somewhere (but i'm one of those that can't remember where...) about a recent poll they (yes, the infamous "they") took over here where they asked lots of random school children what they wanted to be when they grew up, and most of their replies had something to do with being a celebrity of sorts.
whatever happened to the good ole days where people wanted to win their fame by helping people--like saving lives as a doctor. long gone, yup. now it's just about the bling.

I'm right with you on Channel Live. I seem to run into that feeling a lot. Too often, MCs wind up sounding better on a DJ or producer's album than they do on their own. The Herbalizer is a prime example of this, for me. Great in gues shots, but Something Wicked This Way Comes did't move me until the Wildflower spot. Now that's good litening. Guru's Jazzmatazz series is bursting with artists who sound 1000x better on his work than on their own.
The Madlib stuff looks fantastic. My Windows media player is in some sort of spat with the audio link, so I couldn't hear it, but it appears to be right up my alley.
The Verve Remixed is a decent collection that looks to be along the same lines, just working with a different catalog. You haven't lived until you've heard Tricky mix Billie Holiday.

My dad was always pissed that Verve (he did distribution for Universal, and worked with Verve a lot) didn't pick up on what Blue Note was doing at the time. Blue Notes Rare Groove series was doing huge numbers for a while and turning lots of new heads. The music was ripe and the Blue Note folks were waiting for new producers while the great Verve catalog collected dust for so long.
