Actually it wasn't a typo. The game designer thought that "donkey" meant "stupid" in English, so he assumed the name "Donkey Kong" would roughly mean "stupid ape" in English. Obviously he was confusing "donkey" with "ass," imagine if we all played Ass Kong?
