Cats aren't always the most understanding about going on a diet.  I'd recommend either switching to diet food if you haven't or try cutting it down to 1/4 cup a day for a bit and see how he does.  And if that doesn't help, try both.  I give Celia four 1/8 cups a day (when I get up, when I leave for work, when I get home, and when I get ready for bed), so her eating gets spread out a bit.  When she was on 1/4 cup total a day, I gave her more play-time and attention to keep her from noticing if she was hungry, but she lost nearly three pounds in about 8 months, which got her down to a weight the vet felt was good for her.  Re: the pimples, when I was living at home and going to college, the cat we had had the same thing.  Once they were cleaned up, he didn't have as many problems going forward.  Good luck with him!
