Ah, that's a tough one. My mother and I didn't speak for about 2 years prior to this spring, but we had broken that ice in March around my grandmother's (her mother's) passing, and since then had gotten together a couple of times for an hour or two to just hang.
She had just met Sophie, and even had a recent friendly conversation with my father (the first in 4 years). She retired in October, and had the means and the time to do what she wanted with the next phase of her life (she was 62). We all felt that she'd turned the corner on some emotional issues and was actually getting happy, when bam. She died in her sleep 3 weeks ago.
I don't know about you, but for me, despite her difficult personality she was still my mother and I loved her very much-- that's what made it so hard to be around her when she took such poor care of herself. Now that she's gone, of course I wish that I'd had this perspective when she was here. I know it's a cliche, but it's what I want.
