I lived alone in rural NC for a while with my dogs, cats and horses. It took me about a week to get used to it. I had moved my bed downstairs into the basement but I was nervous the first couple of nights so I slept on the couch upstairs. I think I was just nervous that dogs were going to go after my dogs or my horses (it was usual out there) and I wouldn't be able to hear them from the basement.
