its sad... i know nothing of what you have seen, but in australia, to finally become homeless must be a very hard thing to come to terms with... like you would obviously be without family to help out or give you shelter. i know if i became so destitute i would swallow my pride and move home to mum and dads. maybe alot of it is to do with pride as well... dont want to seem like they failed, and their families may not even know how they are living?
who knows... but i guess we are very lucky here, and like melly said, there are support systems in place as long as you dont abuse them.

I'm not sure about the comment of support systems in place being entirely accurate, but Australia does have one of the good few support systems in the world.
That said, people fall through the cracks or simply aren't eligible.
There are things you can do back here at home. As for while traveling, I'm not sure.
