i intend to ask this girl out today, at school. i could use all of the words of encouragement you can muster because i am likely to pussy out because of my fear of rejection. i always do. so feel free to build up my confidance.

also do you think using the quote at the bottom of my journal would work? i jest. i may not be very good at talking to girls but i do know that that wouldn't work.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

what happened you ask? this is what happened:

i found out she was a jehovas witness and i chickened out. i think the only thing that scares me as much as talking to a girl is religion.

was i wrong or do you think i'm right to be a little warry?

When you turn on the TV to watch the news today, a lot of what you see is our leaders giving news conferences to spout their rhetoric. When questioned about their policies effectiveness, they question the patriotism of anyone who disagrees with them. The Bush administration makes war in the name of peace and prosperity but ask us to trust them implicitly about the length of the conflict and manner in which they are conducting this war. They tell us that they need unfettered access into our personal lives because it will help them keep us safe from our enemies. This freedom is given to them through the Patriot Act. This bill gives them freedoms to make war on individuals they feel threaten their beliefs, to invade our privacy without cause, and to control what we read and hear in the media. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. The year 1984 may be in our past but that does not necessarily mean that George Orwells vision of Nineteen Eighty-Four is not in our future.

In George Orwells Nineteen Eighty-Four Winston Smith is a man who has had his fill of the Partys oppressive doctrines. He feels that there is something more than the drudgery of everyday Party life, but thinks that it is unlikely that there really is anyone he can share his beliefs with. He knows that in just having thoughts that the Party and Big Brother are evil, he has committed the most infamous of all crimes against the Party, thoughtcrime. There are rumors though that there is a renegade group known as the Brotherhood that is lead by Party founder Emmanuel Goldstein. Though Winstons life is already forfeit because he has committed thoughtcrime, he hopes to live long enough to find this fabled Brotherhood and help them bring down the Party.

Big Brother is all around in Nineteen Eighty-Four. There is scarcely a place where a Party member can be that there isnt a telescreen. The telescreen is a receiver and emitter of information. It watches over them and spouts party rhetoric at the same time. There are posters of Big Brother everywhere that read Big brother is watching. Where there are no telescreens to watch Party members, there are other good Party members who feel it is their duty to report anyone who might be committing thoughtcrime. There is no escape from thoughtcrime, only the hope that one can evade the inevitable for as long as possible.

In the society the Party has created there are horrible instances of oppression. People are killed for crimes against the Party, and records of them are completely erased so that they never existed. Parents children are taught to suspect them of thoughtcrime and to turn them in to the thought police at the first sign that they have committed this most serious of crimes. Love and the act of making love are frowned upon. The only acceptable reason one can marry and engage in intercourse would be so that they could have children who would then help further the Partys agenda. It was a unacceptable act of intimacy such as this that eventually led to Winstons downfall.

Even language is controlled in Nineteen Eighty-Four. They do this through the use of Newspeak in all literature. The Partys objective is to reduce the written, then verbal language, down to a series of simple verbs and adjectives, with greater or lesser meanings, to be used in conjunction with nouns. The purpose of Newspeak is to reduce the language so much that it is impossible to have the ability to say or even think that the Party is in any way bad or wrong. The Party intends for Newspeak to be the only written and spoken language by no later than 2050.

Also, there is the never ending war against Eurasia. The war against Eurasia is a war that will have no end because it gives the Party reasons to oppress its citizens and create a never ending industrial machine. The war has and always will be against Eurasia until such a time as the Party decides to align itself with Eurasia against Eastasia. When this happened the Party changed all records so they read that they had always been at war with Eastasia. There is nothing the Party cant do. It controls the past as well as the future. The thing that will never change is that the Party will always be at war.

Finally, at the end of Nineteen Eighty-Four Winston gets caught and tortured. The woman he loves, Julia, and he are caught after having met to have sex and talk about the Brotherhood. They know though that they are not being tortured for having sex; they are being tortured and reprogrammed for thoughtcrime. In the end Winston is tortured so completely he forsakes all of his beliefs and finally the woman he loves. He loves Big Brother.

There are many similarities between Orwells fictitious future Nineteen Eighty-Four and the Bush administration: The hopelessness the Party makes some of its citizens feel is similar to the way many U.S. citizens feel about the direction the country is taking right now. The way the Party has unlimited access into its citizens lives and what this administration is trying to do with the Patriot Act are also similar. Under the Bush administration people have been detained and held for unspecified amounts of time without access to council or trial, which is also very similar to the way the Party arrests its citizens for thoughtcrime. The way the Party controlled its literature through the use of Newspeak and the way this administration picks and chooses what pieces of information they feel the public has a right to know. The never ending war the Party has with its enemies for no other reason than it is advantageous for them and the war in Iraq that most U.S. citizens feel should be ended. The Bush administration though, refuses to even consider an exit strategy. Then there are the secret torture facilities and the administrations dancing around the definition of torture. This is very similar to what happens to Winston when he is arrested for thoughtcrime. Nineteen Eighty-Four is obviously an exaggeration of the present, but are we really that far away from it being a reality?

It is hard to imagine and easy to dismiss the idea that ones whole life could be controlled by a government. That any government could manipulate its citizens in such a way, that they would not only be willing to give up their most basic freedoms but that they would welcome the oppression, would be an incredible reality. It seems though that Orwell did not write Nineteen Eighty-Four as a foretelling of what he thought the world would be like but as a warning to those who would unwittingly let their governments get a hold on their lives.
