The Furniture Mogul Speaks the Truth

We have a long, uniue history of country music playing furniture store dynasties here in OKC. Recently Bob Mills, "The Working Man's Friend", was interviewed in our local newspaper. Asked about the fact that he gave up the musical part of his enterprise many years ago, his response was succinct and trite but true: "you can do anything, but you can't do everything".

That quote, though not original, really resonated with me at this point in my life. The problem is that I still seem to want to do everything, or at least too many things. There's no avoiding the fact that getting into too many disparate endeavors does harm one's focus on each individual undertaking. Being a jack of all trades does make it very difficult to be a master on any particular one. I mean, right now I should probably be out doing something rather than being online talking about this issue.

Unfortunately, I don't think I have it in me to focus narrowly on one or two things. I just can't see myself being happy in such a scenario. The best I can do is try to trim some items around the periphery and live with the stress of being a single-threaded personality who's compelled to attempt to multi-task. Racing, rock & roll, computers, photography, home improvement - I just can't be a furniture mogul who doesn't get to play his music.
