So part of my job is to read scripts submitted to my boss. See if they are worth doing yadayadayada. Sometimew they are good but most of the time they are sub-par to terrible. Then after reading these masterpieces, work which may have taken months, even years of grinding out their story, I give them a call and in a couple minutes tell them how their script was"not what we are looking for" i.e. very, very, bad and why we are passing on it (because it was bad stupid!). Usually this is easy since they are mostly not so good. I give them a few pointers (ha, i've only been out of school about a year and i'm giving people, nay professionals, pointers. what an asshole) wish them the best, and say goodbye. Anyways, I am writing this because i just passed on a project written by a published author. Someone who has had multiple articles printed in the LA and NY Times just this month. Added to this, I didnt even read the script, I was just breifly told why we were passing (actually not weird because most producers etc. dont read the scripts. They have "readers" check it out for them, then get coverage and pass, on what these readers thought about it). So I m talking to this guy and attempting to come up with something that doesnt sound completely idiotic, and I feel like a complete ass. Im trying hard not to fumble every response as I repeat the same thing over and over while being as vague as possible, giving the impression I know what I m talking about but not allowing him anything really to shoot back at me with. I mean, he seems like a nice guy and had been waiting for like a month for a response and now he gets some jackass like me returning his calls...what a dumb journal...I m hungry, oooh goldfish crackers

You're not alone. I used to have to tell people to their face that I couldn't reveal a potentially life-changing bureaucratic decision to them (that I knew the answer to) because it wasn't the right time yet. So, they may have been convinced that the decision was going their way and making plans, when I knew it wasn't, or may be despondent because they thought it went against them but in reality was in theor favor. And I would know, but not be able to say. Bureaucracy sucks!
