Sounds like an amazing adventure and life changing experience that you are planning. So brave of you to pick the hard way to do it too and put yourself as far out of your comfort zone as possible! I'm sure hearing about your experiences would be fascinating, not least because you write so well. I recently heard another way of expressing the death bed regret sentiment, I think it was on the Gilmore Girls of all things, and was something like: "I want to live my life so that I'll be able to read an in depth biography about myself in later years and not puke." I quite liked that!

Traveling is definitely worth it, it was the main bonus to joining the military for me. Coming to South Korea and now Japan I can tell you South East Asia is worth seeing and staying in for awhile. I haven't been to China but S. Korea and Japan are both not too tricky to navigate as an English speaker. S. Korea is especially accessible and people are not shy about trying their English out. The Japanese are shy, but if you learn a few basics they will open up. Most of the younger generations all know English in both countries. If you're thinking about S. Korea at all hit up @flowerbomb She's been living there as an English teacher!
