LOL... the fire hydrant is probably for when the creek dries and the brush around that area sometimes catches fire - its close enough to developments, freeways, etc to be a point of concern when the dry season rolls around... how they set all that up beats the hell outta me tho - thought it was neat myself XOXO

In the northeast, unless there is a long-running drought creeks remains creeks, and is probably why I've never seen it before. Guessing the hydrant is right up next to where the fire road you went walking down comes out - fire trucks would pull water from the creek if it remains deep enough, or otherwise hook up to the hydrant.
