It's interesting that cultures with no history or concept of God have evolved the same basic moral principles as those that have grown up fearing God. Not stealing, not killing, no incest etc.
Buddhists have strong and very realistic moral codes that aren't based on fear of punishment by an external force, but rather by an observance of the workings of causality in the here and now.
How can pantheist / atheist cultures arrive at similar moral codes to "God fearing" cultures? You yourself gave a good suggestion: "its the law of doing what you feel is right, based on a fair bit of sensibility, that is more often then not crafted from experience and self-reflection".
God doesn't tell you not to kill (or fuck) your kin - you do it naturally.

the evolution is not enirely random. trial and error becomes less trivial when its effects directly affect its future probability. the appearance of a being to be perfect is not an argument against the evolution but for it, seeing as how the being evolves only in the context of the environment you find it in. we can be such rational beings because it is advantageous to our survival to be so. over millions of years such an extreme advantage is amplified.
