The singer in my old band started doing the whole 'not wearing any shoes' thing after I moved away (to Toronto), apparently. He went all hippie on us.. 
My mom NEVER wears socks either. She lives in Newfoundland, and I don't think she even wears them in the Winter. She'll just throw on a pair of boots and go out to do things, trudging through the snow. She often doesn't wear anything on her feet when she's just out working in the garden either I don't think.
