can anyone describe in detail, with references, how the gnostics were influenced by plato? and whether their relationship to fatalistic astrology also had to do with platos ideas about the divinity of the planetary realms?

The key is that the gnostics shared Platos' dualism (flesh/spirit; as you probably know, to ginostics matter is a lesser god.) It seems to me that the eveklvation of those with the right knowledge has resonances with the Republic? But I dunno about astrology. 
For some reason this reminds me that in the dorms severel times when I was broke I wrote papers for money. In your case, however, I would have done it for free if I knew the subject--I'm such a pushover.

I aggree. There's nothing like trying to evacuate people because of a bomb threat and seeing most of the people go from human(as much as I could call them) straight to animal backed in the corner in the blink of an eye.
