I'm self taught as well, and @orijjinalchris is right, you only need a school or tutor to have someone who really tells you what you did wrong or right. And school forces you to draw something on a regular basis. If you can do that by yourself then you don't need a school at all. I know david revoy, a digital artist from France, he is a self taught freelancer as well and pays his bills with his art. But you should get a proper scanner :D I have a Hyundai document scanner, it looks like a stick and saves scanned stuff on a microSD. You can get scanners like those for like 30 bugs.
