Don't know if enjoy is the correct word, but you might find John Ralston Saul's 1992 book, "Voltaire's Bastards - The Dictatorship of Reason in the West" good for mind-stretching exercises.

A tidbit from part III "Surviving in Fantasy Land", chapter 22 "The Virtue of Doubt" on page 582.

This rootless wandering is perhaps the explanation for the hypnotic effect which the idea of efficiency has upon us. Deprived of direction, we are determined to go there fast. And so we apply this minor sub-product of reason to our economies, administration, arts, and even to our democratic process. We confuse intention with execution. Decision making with administration. Creation with accounting. On the dark plain we wander, totems have been erected, not to indicate the way, but to provide hopeful relief. That of efficiency is one of the highest, a freestanding moral value.

It is difficult in this context to keep in mind that the essence of civilization should tend towards consideration, not speed. The easy answer is that decision making must be decoupled from administration; the former being organic and reflective, the latter linear and structured. Bit in a civilization which has mistaken management techniques for moral values, all answers are a trap.

From what I've seen in the past week, Obama's coming across really well, without any of Clinton's sloppiness or Carter's naivet. And I get the general sense that people of all persuations think the time for fun and games is over. What do you think?

what would fascism look like?

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism -- Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights -- Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes...

it boils down to 3 things: fear, ignorance, and apathy.

who among us is immune from all of these?

Tough question. I'm pretty good with combating ignorance, but sometimes have problems with the other two. It may be a permutation of the engineering "pick two" adage.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

... good, fast, or cheap - pick two.

If so, I'd just as soon start out "shit my pants" afraid, but not ignorant or apathetic. Fear can be mediated with the cultivation and application of knowledge and desire.

The other two poles would be:

[1]. apathetic, but knowledgeable and unafraid.
[2]. ignorant, but passionate and fearless.

Option one seems to be a non-starter ... start out apathetic, and it is unlikely it'll end up any other way.

Option two sounds too much like my interpretation of Sarah Palin's qualifications for vice president.

Don't know how the demographics plays out, but my baseless gut feel says the bell curve peaks at apathetic.

What a lot of people don't know or don't remember is that the Nazis came to power in Germany by winning an election. The way the situation was, they didn't have to have more than half the people behind them -- they just had to be the biggest and noisiest single group. The majority of the people facilitated this horror by choosing to let it happen. Like the man said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

What does it mean to be a liberal?

1. Liberals believe individuals should doubt their own truths and consider fairly and open-mindedly the truths of others. This is at the very heart of liberalism. Liberals understand, as Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once observed, that "time has upset many fighting faiths." Liberals are skeptical of censorship and celebrate free and open debate.

2. Liberals believe individuals...

You know, I think we have to change the language of the debate from liberals versus conservatives, to progressives versus reactionaries. I'm incubating this idea, so I can't fully articulate the reasons for this change.

Speaking as a man, Sarah Palin scares the living bejeesus out of me, too, especially with John McCain's actuarial statistics, and his recent erratic behavior staring me in the face.

On the other hand, if she wasn't in the race then Tina Fey would never have had the opportunity to do this.

Eh? So, if they happen to be ass-loving demons, and start at the other side, or have a nipple fetish - then what? confused

Sasha is intriguing ... pretty as hell, has a far-reaching intellect, talented (plays guitar; left-handed, no less) and with few inhibitions so far as I've seen, yet grounded, and she owns herself. First saw her in Fashionistas: Safado, but my favorite Sasha performances are from Blake's "House Pets".

sasha fucking gray, indeed.

I think most people are like that, I think the sun just makes people feel good, I think the body really does need a little bit of it.

My birthday is this Sunday. I'm really sorry I missed your birthday, I suck at life. You know I really did think you were like no older then 25, and would have guessed 23, you look better then most 19 year old girls.

So why did you not want to drive a car, cars can be very fun, my best friend is 24 and she is just now learning to drive, I don't see anything wrong with waiting if you are abele to do so.

Well I think that is good, you have to keep people guessing, keep them on their toes and make sure they know that there are still things they do not know about you.

Well at least you will have lots of new experiences that you can paint about.

Well at least people are interested in you, I find it very hared to make friends (and keep them) and even harder to find a date.

Well no I do not have that problem, if I do not call people or text them then they will not make the first move and I can never get people to hang out with me, I just come home every night and get on SG, I don't even go out on the weekends anymore, I'm a loser.

happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you. happy happy late birthday to you.

Happy birthday and congrats on the car! I've had a car since I was 16, but now I don't have one ! (living in London means a car is unnecessary.. Hope you are well.
