I'm from Canada too.  It's true that lots of drivers don't pay attention to cyclists, they don't pay attention to others drivers either.  But there is a lots of cyclists that don't seem to really care about there own safety, they don't care about road signs.  Red lights and stop signs are for everyone, not just car drivers.  Sorry for my English, it's not my natural language

Where I live, there are some places where the sidewalk is designated as the only bike route.  In those places, cyclists need to ride on the sidewalk because the road is too narrow for people to pass them.
