I went there as a small child in 1967 - my family were going to Cornwall on holiday. My late father never believed in the 'Straight line' rule of travel, and, as we started our journey at about midnight, it was just getting light as we got there. Dad, mum and me walked about the stones for a good while, and I remember being a bit frightened of the stones simply because of their size. It was one of the most awe inspiring and magical things I can remember doing as a kid. Sadly, due to the usual idiots, where you are in the picture is as close as you can get - except for midsummer's day, when the [cough] [not] 'Druids' turn it into a farcical spectacle. Most people don't realise that the circle is only a tiny part of a vast complex. Look at aerial photographs of the area, and you'll see what I mean. xxxxx

I was also there, but in 2001... i seem to remember being able to get much closer than you, but still barred from touching the stones and restricted to a path around them
