going home is never giving up. i struggled with that when i left calgary -- but instead of "giving up" i looked at it as "starting over" and have thus made my life a better, more liveable place. if you have friends, family, support, love... anything back in calgary, it would not be considered failure or giving up to go back. it all depends on what you really want and/or need, and if you're not finding what you want where you are... leave! life isn't simple, but don't let anybody make you think you've made the wrong choice in anything -- at least you have the power TO choose. 
good luck in whatever you decide! (fwiw, i miss calgary sometimes but I never see it as a failure... just a lesson not to repeat, hah. i learned a lot there...)
