This song has always seemed really sweet to me. For a while I thought he wrote it about D'arcy, the bassist. Sort of a send off, considering the break up which came shortly enough afterward. Either way, it sort of acknowledges that everything has those two sides, even when you love something, it still is what it is. For better or worse, sickness/health.
For me this song describes a very a cosmic irony. It's like the character is talking about all of these things that don't make sense to him, he sees things in this character that are a tragedy, but to him they are enticing qualities. Perhaps he was looking for love and couldn't find it, maybe just when he was giving up, he discovered something amazing.
This is probably the most effective journal that you could post in my opinion, cause this is the kind of thing I respond to.
