I have all the characteristics of a human being: blood, flesh, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the …

I did a search on this group for boning and didn't find what I am looking for, so I am sorry if I still missed it.

My wife wants to make a steam punk corset for herself and has been talking about it for years, but doesn't have the right …

Im fully aware that its illegal to use whale boning. I say true corset boning becausse modern corsets don't hold up the way they used to steel and the plastic tend to bend and pop.
sadista:
There must be different qualities of steel then. Plastic boning is obviously crappy, but I've had good quality steel-boned corsets that easily survive daily wear for waist training with no bending or popping. The bones hold up longer than the fabric, in my experience.
I don't know how you could compare the quality of whaleboned corsets vs. steel anyway, without actually having a whaleboned corset to compare it to.

i am working on a corset and i can not find good boneing i am worried about ording some and it getting here and not being sterdy. does anyone know where to get good boneing for corsets

Hi
Might be a bit late, but here are 2 addresses where you can get boning from
US: http://farthingalescorsetmakingsupplies.com/
UK: www.venacavadesign.co.uk

I guess that Farthingales is your best bet, I have no idea how much Venacava would charge to send to the US, but they send worldwide and are really nice people.
Go for spiral boning, apart for where your lacing will be (if you lace it that is), you'll need spring steel boning there to keep it straight
Avoid plastic boning if you want proper support, as plastic boning will bend after a while...
Not sure this is very clear, if you need any help, I'm here

I am buying my first corset-waist cincher pictured here:
Morgana Femme Couture
The corsets are made with 20 spiral steel bones and 6 flat spring steel bones and are double boned as well according to the Q&A
I'm wondering if that is durable enough for long term use and if …

amelinda:
normally I try to stay away from spiral steel, because after a while it tends to form more to your body than forming your body to it. However, if you are less umm plumpish this probably wont be an issue for you. I could be wrong about this, but double boned doesnt really do anything extra for you, the fabric should be doing the cinching of your waist, the boning is just to shape the corset at the seam. How many bones are in it should just depend on how many fabric panels it has. So as far as shaping this corset has enough/too many steel bones and shouldnt necessarily give your more curve or cinch in your waist, but visually it has a nice look. I would just like to point out that I dont really know what I am talking about, and just trying to go off memory from what somebody once told me like 5 years ago.
noctilucence:
The only real difference between spiral steel and flat steel bones is that the spiral steel ones are flexible in all directions and so allow for more creativity in their placement, while the flat steel bones will only bend outward and not sideways so they are usually used where straight boning is necessary. Both are very durable and should maintain the shape of the corset for as long as it lasts.

I don't know much about double boning and its effectiveness compared to single boning, but the number of bones necessary really depends on the size and type of corset. Obviously, a cincher will need a few more than a corset made solely for looks, but I don't imagine any more than about 16 all around would make a significant difference. While the bones do provide more support than the fabric in between, keep in mind that the weakest part of any waist cincher is its seams so the less seams, the less places a corset has to give way when under pressure.

Judging by the picture, this one looks very well made and is likely to last for a good many years. The only thing you'll really need to worry about is how it fits. A good rule of thumb is to buy one that's 4 inches smaller than your actual waist size, as this will leave plenty of room for tightening.
