Well, first blog... and here I lay, lamenting the end of a badass three-day weekend, and dreading going to the office in the morning...
How many of you remember when television shows would air "Very Special Episodes"?
Not to be confused with the "After school special", which in itself was a stand-alone show, the VSE was a random episode during a series (usually a sitcom), in which the plot would step away from the daily situation comedy, and focus on a "controversial" topic, such as rape, pedophilia, drug abuse, alcoholism, drinking and driving, guns, peer pressure, sex, eating disordersetc. The list goes on and on.
Who could forget the dramatic episode of "Saved by the Bell" in which Jessie Spano becomes addicted to caffeine pills, in order to study for a test, and then later forgets she's already taken it? How many of us have reenacted the climactic "I'm so excited, I'm so excited, I'm so (sob) scared!" scene?
How about the ultra-disturbing two-part episode of "Diff'rent Strokes", where Gordon Jump (the Maytag man) portrays Mr. Horton, a bicycle shop owner/pedophile, who lures young Arnold (RIP Gary Coleman) and his friend Dudley to his home with the promise of pizza and games, and then attempts to molest them? (I'm pretty sure I'D probably fall for the ol' "pizza and games" routine too)
Anybody remember when Alex P. Keaton started taking diet pills to study, then becomes addicted? He paints the house, digs some irrigation ditches, then finally crashes, and ultimately ends up missing his test. (Sorry Jessie, Alex beat you by a few years, and at least you got to take your test, so shut the fuck up)
"Full House" had a bunch of them. DJ starves herself to try to lose weight, and ends up passing out after like, a day. (punk bitch) Stephanie tries smoking, Michelle is afraid of people dying, Danny comes out of the closet(wait, scratch that last one. It MIGHT not have happened. But it probably should have. I might have watched the show more if it had.)
I'm permanently scarred by an episode of "Facts of Life" where Natalie is almost raped by a clown on Halloween.
EVERY SINGLE episode of "Degrassi" was a "Very Special Episode". An episode of that show would be special if it DIDN'T mention abortion, homosexuality, teen pregnancy, alcoholism, drugs, abuse, racism, sex, peer pressureetc.etc.
I vaguely remember an episode of "Punky Brewster" where a girl hides in an abandoned refrigerator during a game of hide and seek, gets stuck and nearly suffocates. Not too sure where they were going with that one. Probably something to do with not doing drugs. Because let's face it, you'd have to be high to climb inside a dirty old fridge for fun
I think that my personal favorite would have to be the very special episode of "Blossom" where her boyfriend tried to put the moves on her and she said "no", and then later her dad got pissed. Then Joey said "Whoa" but nobody laughed 'cause it was serious stuff. I'm pretty sure that episode won a very special Emmy or something.
I need a drink.
