Hey there everyone,
I got some time today before I leave a town called Coffs Harbor, so I
deceided to write an email out, because I probably won't be able to do so
for another week. Nick and I brought in the New Year at Coff's Harbor, a
small town about halfway in between brisbane and Sydney. We have been
driving and living out of a caravan for the past five or six days. Its
going pretty well.
Since the last email, I have seen Zeke off, gotten Nick, brought in the new
year and gotten in some close calls, but I am still living and that is
good. We started from sydney and the plan was to head north in the
caravan. In sydney we did a bunch of stupid shit. We did one day of just
sightseeing. We checked out the operah house, the rocks, bondi beach,
manly, and the downtown area. It was pretty good, we took a ton of
pictures, which you will all see soon. We parted with Zeke on the 28th from
bondi beach and picked up a surfboard, but on the way out to get the
caravan, we got a message that he needed to be picked up from the airport
because they wouldn't let him board his plane. So rather than booking out
of town we picked him up, and went out to bondi beach in the caravan with in
hopes of some surf, which we got at the north end of the beach. That night
was going to be interesting with three dudes in the caravan, but Zeke fell
in love with some slovinian girl that day and was wanting to go back into
sydney to see her. After hours of debating, i finally kicked his ass out of
town, and told him to go hang out with her. Nick and I stayed in Bondi, and
went out drinking, and it was special. Needless to say I woke up the next
day with a hangover, nick by my side and sandy as all hell in a caravan.
btw i had all my clothes on. The next day Zeke walked up looking like about
five bucks, and we got him to a few places to do some errands, and then
dropped him off at the airport, headed to new zealand. We got the hell out
of Sydney to start our surf trip, and our first stop was at avalon beach,
where we went out for a couple of hours. It was an ok break with a bunch of
rays swimming under us at all times. We headed north from there, and found
a place to catch some zzzz's in a parking lot.
The next day we woke up, and checked a bunch of surf spots, but ended up at
a place called cathedral hill bay ("catho" to the locals). We got some
great surf there. There was a long beach there, and on the way out we saw a
porcupine. Pretty cool animal. There was a right and a left there on the
beach, and it was really powerful. I got my ass kicked a few times, and I
had a noticable stretching in my leash. We stayed out there for a few
hours, then got going after eating some tuna sandwiches and having some
beers. On our quest from catho, we stopped at some other beaches to try to
surf, but found nothing. We got ourselves to a national park beach, and the
sky looked like the last scene from ghostbusters 2 when Viggo gets awoken.
huge thunderstorm started, and it looked like the second coming. So we took
a hold of the situation and Nick and I took showers with soap and shampoo in
an open shower at the beach, where people wash their feet off. we got
pictures of that too.
>From there we went to Nelson bay, which was a resort town that was full of
people on holiday. There was no place to park anywhere there, so we
traveled a little bit out of town, and found a sweet bluff to chill at and
spend the night. That night we drank about 24 beers, and ate ramen while
watching kangaroos pass by us all night. In the middle of the night I was
awoken by a dirt biker gang much like the lost boys that were spinning
donuts around our car. I tried to wake nick up, and then got ready to jump
out of the van in my underwear and start crackin skulls, then they all
pulled away. I checked that our boards were still under the car, and found
nick to be sound asleep. I know that he won't be waking up to save my life
anytime soon, so thats good to know.
The next morning we woke up and surfed a place called Fingal Bay, and it was
a gangbusters right. There was kid out there half my age shredding on my
head, and making me feel like a bum. After that wave, we started heading
north, and we checked out a few spots, and then ended up having to take a
ferry from one bay to the next. We loaded our car up onto the boat and got
into it. On the other side we had to cross country drive to a couple of
spots, and on the way we saw a ton of wildlife, and took tons of pictures.
WHile trying to take one picture I got bitten by a snake. Considering that
Australia has eight of the ten deadliest snakes in the world, i was scared,
and we were out in the middle of nowhere. I thought that I was going to die
for a few minutes, but then when I didn't get quesy, I figured that I was
going to live. I shot a video saying goodbye, and Ill show you that.
Later, we found out that it was a red belly black snake or something like
that. It strikes defensively, and nine out of ten times that it strikes, it
doesn't inject venom. I dodged that bullet. The funny thing is that the
last picture that I took was on nicks camera, and he was looking all nice,
and I had my pants down.
We went to a place to surf early the next morning, and it was amazing. It
was called Hungrey's and it was a hollow left point break, and it was one of
the better waves ive ever surfed in my life. I was burning up in the water
with my suit on, so I don't think that Ill be able to wear a suit anymore.
Its too hot. We surfed there for a few hours, then started to get out of
town, and heading to Coff's harbor. We got there, and it was new years eve,
so we went out with this girl we were staying with. She is the sister of a
friend back home, and her younger sister is one of my junior lifeguards. We
went to her boyfriends parents house, which was a mansion, and partied there
all night. They had argentinian family there, so we celebrated new years
the argentinian way as well, and ill tell you all about that later. We got
pretty drunk there, and I had a big girl on my heels, so we got out of
there, and went back to the house. Kristen and her boyfriend thought it
would be funny to invite her to the house as well, so I went out into the
van and locked up the fortress.
New years day was pretty mellow, Nick was extremely hungover, so we took it
easy and went back to the same house to eat pizza and lounge around in the
pool all day.
That brings us to where we are right now. We are getting on the road soon,
and heading up to Byron Bay for a couple of days, then to brisbane. Once in
brisbane, we will chill for a few days, then go up to the great barrier reef
for a week of scuba diving. After that I am off to New Zealand, and from
there we will see what happens. I think that Ill be home in a month, but i
might be longer. Love everyone, happy new year, miss you all.
stay classy,
justin
