Our Lady by Alma Lopez
I went to a symposium yesterday called he Healing Powers of La Virgen--Tonantzin: Transformations, Appropriations, and Transgressions." It talked about the Virgren of Guadalupe and her healing powers. This piece was featured in the exhibit, and my opinion on this piece, is that is is AWESOME. I love how this peace represents Chicana feminism. THis piece because very controversial in New Mexico when it was put on a flyer advertising the exhibit and mailed to peoples homes. People were offended when they started to recieve this image in the mail, because it does not follow the traditional representation of the virgrin of Guadalupe. The virgin of Guadalupe is supposed to be long suffering and silent among other things. However, you can see from this image, that that is not at all the attitude of the model, Patrisia, in this picture.
But what people dont know about Patrisia is that she was raped at 25, and for years suffered from extreme body image issues. How she got over those issues was by being a model for art students at UCLA. And now she is on this image. I feel like she represents the ideal for Chicana feminism. Strong, able to overcome, smart and loving of onesself.
I love this image.
