So there are some, to me, amusing ways that I know I'm truly a nerd. I'm stuck in Afghanistan, away from almost everything that matters in my life - what little of my family I care for, my friends, the women I love, fast food, freedom to go wherever I want without needing body armor.
Right now though, my major focus, the little scratching under my skin, is that I want to run a Dungeons and Dragons game so damn bad. I keep sitting here, letting my mind wander, and coming up with plots and story hooks and adventures that I would love to put together. It makes it worse that I enjoy reading D&D supplements as much as I do, as they're very interesting. So I read all these interesting places and monsters and settings, and they're wonderful - so I want to use them. It's driving me mad right now.
Right now, I'm reading about the Dark Sun setting. It's like a medieval post-apocalyptic setting, where magic, unlike it's normal role as this awesome, shiny thing that can do anything and everyone loves it. No, fuck that in Dark Sun. Magic feeds on life. Cast a spell, something near you dies. However, everyone USED to love magic, so they pretty much destroyed all the plant and most of the animal life on the planet. So now the populace tries to survive in the barren desert of a world ripped apart by arcane power.
I like that it's a setting vastly apart from the normal types of settings, the ones where you could imagine a Lord of the Rings or a whatnot to happen - it'll take players by surprise, and greatly upset their preconceptions as to how a fantasy world will work.
Ok, gonna stop now before I spend an hour talking about cool details, and just piss myself off more.
