Just in time for the World Cup! the authorities have finally allowed a marker to be erected at the site of the Fhrer Bunker. Sixty one years in the making, the documentary panel describes the construction, use and destruction of one of Berlin's most controversial, though absent, landmarks. City authorities had been resistant to the idea of marking the site lest it become a shrine for neonazis. Today's unveiling was even attended by one of the bodyguards who had spent the last days of the war underground with Hitler. The location is but a stone's throw (or perhaps 2,711 stones) from the Holocaust memorial and is at the edge of an otherwise unremarkable parking area besides on the hideous apartment complexes built by the East German authorities in the 1980's.
