The more I see of Lady Gaga, the more I have to admire her work. In general I dismiss pop artists that only produce dance hall hits as nothing more than single minded overgrown cheerleaders and at first I regarded Lady Gaga as nothing more than at soon to pass some hits wonder.
Then I saw the video for Bad Romance one morning - and hated it. It contained all of the elements all of those pop videos always have; nudity, explicit dancing and heaps of wet beedroom looks and in the usual combinations.
Then I saw it again a little bit later. And again. And again. It was everywhere, on every tv as soon as we had a break at school, and suddenly I realized that I really, really liked it.
Not because I had been brainwashed into liking all of the booty shaking - I still despised Beyonc's Beautiful nightmare just as much - but because the closer you looked at Lady Gaga, the more morbid and grotesque she was. The women in Bad Romance aren't beautiful, they are freakish. Their moves aren't sexy ass shaking, it is morbidly twisted. Even she is not made up to be pretty. Instead she looks almost alien. Then I heard about the video for Telephone, and just out of curiosity I looked it up on youtube.
Yes, she is naked. But she is not hot. Well yes, she is. But in that same obscene way that the burlesque dancer with her amputated leg in Bizarre Magazine is hot. She is not afraid to get exposed in front of the camera, but in the same time she seems not to care at all if she looks good or not. There is murder, prostitution, slavery, bribery - decadence beyond belief. She is like a female pop version of Marilyn Manson, only people probably won't try and blame random massacres on her. She is grotesque, twisted, askew.
And I love it.
