I have been taking Judo classes. I have no real natural ability at all, but it broadens my options in any kind of bad situation. My basic problem is that my level of body awareness is very low. I am not conscious of how I stand or move. One would think that your body just moves in the best way possible and tells you were you are and what you are doing effectively. This may be true for others, but not for me. Being in my body is like driving a car, I end up where I want to end up, but often have only a vague recollection of how I got there. Who knows, perhaps physical awareness will trickle down into other aspects of my life as well.
To be clear, I am not worried about or looking forward to being in a violent situation, I am essentially a peaceful person, but I don't want to be a peaceful person simply because I have no other option. Being able to choose a physical confrontation, or at least being able to handle one that is thrust upon me removes fear and anxiety from one more factor in my life.
