Scott Pilgrim vs. The World!
RumTommyRum vs. The Movie!
Back in the summer that both Iron Man and The Dark Knight came out I went to the Chanhassen Dinner Theater for a showing of The Producers with my family. Now for those of you who don't know me I have a sister who is about 4 years younger than me in age but more than likely 6 years older than me in maturity, but that is besides the point. It was either at dinner or before the show that the two previously mentioned movies were, well, mentioned. I stated that although The Dark Knight was the better made movie it wasn't my favorite of the two. I am unashamed huge fan of Iron Man. Could it be that I love him for his being sexier than Bruce Wayne or that he is, like me, a massive fan of booze? Nope, those aren't the reasons I picked that movie as my favorite. The reasons were that I found Iron Man to be more fun. I enjoyed myself through out the whole movie and found the direction and Robert Downey Jr to be amazing (p.s. this wasn't his come back movie like some said... that goes to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). So how does this lead into Scott Pilgrim vs. The World? Well I've had debates about favorite movie of the year since this summer. I pick this! Hands down the Tommyest movie ever made! Greatest movie of the year that I've seen in 2010? Nope, that goes to Inception. But we're not hear to talk about prancing Leo's movie, not at all! This is about the great, GREAT Scott Pilgrim vs. The World!
This wonderful piece of film is bought to us by a lot of people but let's single out three... Brian Lee O'Malley, Edgar Wright, and Michael Bacall. First of Mr. O'Malley bought the world to life in an amazing 6 volume Scott Pilgrim series, which if you haven't read you really should! I do find it to be a better love story between Scott and Ramona than the movie shows but that is also because it shows more of the arcs of a relationship but anyways! The character's he created were just some of the best representations of our generation. These are people in their late teens and 20's who so are people I have met and know in some form or fashion. Plus the world that these people live in is both very real and very much in a fantasy world (I wish there was a subspace highway or when you defeat someone they broke into coins). But then came Mr. Bacall and Wright who broke down the 6 volumes into one script. Now is this a direct translation from one form of media to another? No but like all great adaptations they get the right moments in and include references thought out for true fans(quotes used by other characters and also background things you have to keep an eye out for). And then game the actual movie...
WOW! It is perfect! Casting was spot on (sort of but look lower for that). Who steals the movie for me? Wallace Wells! He was one of my favorite things in the books and in the movie Kieran Culkin of Igby Goes Down fame makes a fantastic character far more fantastic! But more about the look of the film, this is THE video game movie. I have been burned many times by movies trying to take video game franchises and pissing on them (Super Mario Bros. and Resident Evil can burn in hell). But this, with out even starting out as a video game, is the best at showing how great a video game movie would be if put in the Wright hands (hehe!). Edgar Wright does what he does best and that is make something creative and awesome but adding personal touches. He uses so many great tricks and things though out the movie that it would be silly to this them all. But one thing you will catch is the use of sound that he so amazingly uses. Listen to the movie sometime for the background noises... you will here songs from The Legend of Zelda, Sonic Rings, and various other 8 Bit noises. But in the end you can use all those tricks to woo me in but make me love your movie you need to make me care. Care I do about the people in this movie I want Scott to win and that is thanks to everyone involved.
RumTommyRum vs. Michael Cera!
Before and after this movie came out there was a lot said about the casting of Michael Cera in the title role. I feel that he does a grand job with the character but do I love him as Scott Pilgrim, no. Why? Well first off it is no fault of George Michael but my own damn fault. I read the books before I saw the movie and was invested in one thought about the character, he was a strange version me. One could say the Canadian version of Tommy who was good at playing bass. I have had my trails and tribbleations with laddies plus I also tend to live in my own fantasy world so it was easy for me to jump into thought of being him. When I read the books I just pictured me as Scott each and every time. Which meant when I saw the movie it was harder for me to project myself into the shoes of Scott since someone else is being him. Silly I know but true. Cera gets a lot of flack for being the same character in all his movies which isn't fair. He's young and skinny and nerdy. This things don't offer much of various roles to be played but when he is give a great role he can own it (examples of this are Scott of course and George Michael and that kid in Juno). So don't blame Michael Cera for playing the same role but blame Hollywood for not giving the kid great roles.
RumTommyRum vs. The DVD!
To be honest, I can't wait for 10 years down the road when this movie becomes a cult classic and then I can get the commentary I really wanted for this (which would be Edgar Wright and Quentin Tarantion doing a sequel to their Hot Fuzz commentary). But besides that this DVD is amazing. It offers both insights in the creation of the film and also a bit of fun. There are of course the commentaries that include Edgar, Bacall, and O'Malley and Edgar and Bill Pope (who is also amazing!). There are two other commentaries from various members of the cast that are hilarious. There is the making of documentary which I learned that no one wanted to stop making the movie at all. A bloopers reel that is fairly funny. Also there are some mini documentaries on the music of the film that I loved because I love the music of the movie. But all in all a great release and I hope one day it gets the Hot Fuzz special edition treatment.

rumtommyrum:
other fact that i didn't mention is the awesomeness of Tom Jane and the even more awesomeness of Clifton Collins Jr.! Watching each commentary I got sad when their Vegan Police scene shows up that Clifton doesn't get mentioned as much at all! So I will do what I can to say Clifton Collins Jr. as much as I can!

P.S. Sorry for spelling and grammatical errors due to drunkness BTW!
