so, despite its ny times review, i decided to give a & e's "rollergirls" a chance. this was a mistake. its amazing to see a group of women take something so asinine so seriously, and then also try to portray as if it were something that really fit their own style of athleticism. i thought, initially, that i would at least watch the sport before immediately deciding these women are not athletes, but i found out that i was just really disapointed to discover my initial thoughts were true. i mean, maybe just being in the culture is enough for some of them, but really, why is it not enough for the others who seek to make others admit that roller derby is something truly special? dont get me wrong, it certainly has its charm. i can find little fault, at least in principle, with hot girls roller-skating around in skimpy outfits and occasionally attempting to beat the shit out of each other. what could be more american? i guess the show just reminded me too much of the diner waitress that plays in a league in newport (yes, that newport) who kept referring to 'practice' and muttering about 'plays' in a shameless attempt to get me and my dining partner to ask her in what sport she participated. when she answered 'roller derby' i realized that i just didnt have a response to that. i immediately started wishing that i could start eating my eggs and she would get the hint and take off, but of course i had to endure her monologue in order to ask her for some tabasco. maybe its that roller derby is so loved by those who live it that they just want to spread the joy to others. thats certainly a possibility, but i just seem to get the feeling that more than anything, the most vocal people just want attention and to be considered 'athletes' for participating in a sport that doesnt demand that they are.
