I have been thinking lately (dangerous I know). I have been thinking about the things I have decided to change in my life and the things I have allowed to stay the same. A thread on the Geezer board asked about things you have done as a geezer, which got me to thinking.
Things I have changed:
1. I no longer have any dealings with my family (a friend told me a few days ago that 'family is like beating yourself upside the head with a hammer...it feels good when you stop.' This statement illustrates my family completely)
2. I started wearing sun block everyday
3. I quit my PhD program with only a dissertation left...they were sucking the life out of me and I realized that I needed to quit for myself and that it was okay to do so.
4. I moved to Wyoming, a small town in Wyoming (which has one more school after this one to prove itself as a good idea)
5. I have changed my body in different ways (surgically and non, for good reasons and bad reasons), and I have come to grips with that and am happy with how I am right now.
6. I stopped wearing so much makeup, a friend shot a short film about why women wear makeup; she filmed me applying my normal makeup and asked some poignant questions. When I saw the finished film, all of the women basicially said that we wear makeup as a 'disguise or to hide something;' she made this film just before my 30th birthday and watching myself and listening to my answers, I made the decision to stop covering up so much. I have freckles and scars and blemishes, so now I wear makeup that lets people see 'me' (it took getting used to seeing myself, which just illustrated to me that this was a good change to make)
7. I have posted naked pictures of myself (and occasionally ponder my sanity for doing so...
)
8. I have made an effort to find happiness and keep it in my life, even by unconventional means
9. I have divulged secret sexual fantasies to another person
10. I have started blogging (what an infectious thing this has become).
