Awhile back I wrote a paper encompassing and covering 2 historical events that framed the lives of those from my parent's generation, as well as 2 historical events that framed the lives of people from my own generation.
It was a horrible assignment and I wasn't looking forward to writing it, but I thought it would help if I chose to write about 'events' that I was interested in. One of the things I wrote about was Beatlemania. Everyone in my class told me that it was too niche of a subject and that I should do something that was fitting of the term 'macrosociology', so something like the women's equal rights movement or the impact of Neil Armstrong's landing on the moon on a global scale.
Me being me, I told 'em to faff off and wrote about what I wanted to write about. I'm posting this with great delight, as not only did I get a high distinction on my essay (a mark of which only 5 out of near 800 students enrolled in the unit received), but my lecturer wants to use my essay as a 'best example' for future students enrolling in the unit.
So moral of the story? Stick to your guns and do what you wanna do, rather than what people expect of you!
