So i been thinking about my future recently. I just finished my first year of University studying criminology. And i feel good about it. So far i have learnt the fundamentals of forensic science (and i can qualify to continue forensic science after my degree in Criminology). In forensic science we learnt all the different methods of fingerprinting, a few methods such as thin layer chromatography and spot testing which identify drugs such as morphine, panadiene, and so on. I learnt how to identify explosives and place them into catagories and so on. I also learnt all the different theories and approaches to law making, crime, criminals and policing. I learnt the basics of psychology and next year i get to do criminal profiling!!!!. I learnt the basics of law and shit to do with that. That subject killed me!.
Next year i get to do more law work (by the end of my course, i would have completed 3 years of legal training, so if i want to continue legal, i'd only have to do 1 or 2 more years instead of the full 4 or 5. I get to do an entire subject on terrorism, which that excites me because i am absalutely interested in that topic and working to prevent it. I get to do work for cyber crimes, and hopefully developing ways of preventing it, and/or policing it because that is extremely difficult!.
All this has got me thinking. What am i going to do after uni. I have a few choices. My first choice and this would be a major change and it would have to work in my favour in order for it to work at all, and that is to move to America and begin a criminology career there hopefully at the FBI or any other major government agency. That would be a dream, but the problem of that is, i would be new to the country, i'd still have to work towards getting a citizenship and i would have no where to live. I might not even earn enough to support myself while i am over there.
My next option was to join the AFP in Australia. AFP= Australia Federal Police. The AFP would pay heaps but they only accept the best and i don't have those credentials, there are a few better students than me out there. AFP would mean i would have to move to the city, life in an apartment and become a city slicker, which would be awesome when going clubbing and not having to worry about $50-$70 taxi fares to get home. My last option and its the most viable option is working for my local council. I have been volunteering there for the last 6 years doing volunteering my time and skills in organising local gigs and running them, getting the bands and promoting them. I have been told that because of that, i have my foot in the door and that i would have a big chance of them offering me a job. Plus i know a few of the people at the council because i do alot of design work for them. So they can always put a good word in for me.
I also wonder about my future and whether i will be living at home or be moving out, will i have a girl that i love or be just flinging around. All this has been spinning in my head.
So the question i post to you guys and i would love some response from you guys and some stories because i am honestly interested.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years and why?
