The road trip starts in nine days. I'm excited. I haven't been away in awhile. It'll be nice to get a break. Still no laptop so I'm not sure how much internet access I'll have. I really need to pick one up though so I can check email, pay bills, etc... I'll figure it out. I have a few days still.

With three months left I'm already starting to feel disconnected. Of course, I never really got settled out here -no new lasting friendships, no favorite bars, book stores, or coffee shops -there was just never any time. Funny. Two years and no time -that pretty much sums up the past two years. Two years earnestly shuffling paper across a desk like an immigrant hustler playing...

I actually don't even take photos! All of these were taken in one day for my visitor to show his parents. Well...besides the naked ones wink

February coming to an end already. March lands us firmly in 2008. I guess this is what happens every year. The days clip by like telephone polls while you're starring out the window of a train. I want to check them off like items on a To Do list but the list just keeps expanding towards the horizon and I'm always running after it playing...

Nice imagery.

I feel like time is racing past as well... I've been feeling that way for years. I guess it's part of getting older.

"Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well, yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless."
-- Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky

I am very glad I read that.

January turned out to be a decent month. I'm hoping for a slightly better February. The problem is February will be a bit more complicated. I do get a bit of a break though and the weather should finally start to turn nicer. That's always a bonus. For some reason December and January are always miserable and rainy here. We'll see. As long as the...

I think I'd still give myself a "B" on my resolutions. Maybe a "B+" -wait and see. There's still lots of hard work ahead... but every day, week, month, I stick with it is one step closer to making new habits and getting new routines established -I think that's the key.
la_llorona:
Good for you. There's nothing harder than changing your routine, especially if it's one you generally enjoy. I have been trying to train myself to eat less but at the end of the day, I don't see that much in the way of results. Man, it's hard to diet in this country. Sure there's lots of diet propaganda aruond, and sure there are lots of good choices in the grocery store of things you should eat... but then there's the other stuff: everywhere you look there are restaurants hawking their densely caloric products, and commercials, bilboards, and worse than any of that, social pressure to conform. What's wrong with you? Why are you spoiling our fun by reminding us that we're eating crap? smile

Whatever your resolutions may be, I am impressed that a month after New Years Eve, it's even a subject for conversation with you! Cheers.

I'd still give myself a B for my resolutions although I sometimes feel like I'm trying to not keep them. I suspect this is true for most of us.

In other news I finally set a departure date. I think the summer will approach even more quickly now that I have an endpoint. Another move. This time I'm going to prepare. Last time I ended...

Man I envy your plans. I could really use a departure from this town right quick. If you can, do a tour diary for us folks that need vicarious freedom.

January 4, 2008. So far 2008 is off to a pretty good start. I'd give myself a "B" on how well I'm doing with my New Year's resolutions. Being sick as a dog hasn't helped but there's not much I can do about that (except maybe wear a hat more). I have friends visiting in February which is crazy -I just had someone visit in...

Three comments on my last entry -I think that's a record.

I'm going to take tomorrow off from work. It's been a long week that passed in slow motion agony. I'm not sure I accomplished anything. A couple of days I just dealt with incoming nonsense and didn't move any of the stuff off my desk. This is a big deal when you're a professional...

It's Sunday. I really need to go Christmas shopping. I always wait too long and then spend a fortune in shipping. Argh. I should also really go to work and try and move a few projects off my desk -during the week it seems like all I do is return emails/voicemails and attend meetings. Of course what I want to do is go see The...

When I was a teenager in NYC I used to love going to The Strand - a gigantic shrine to rare and interesting as well as ordinary used books in lower Manhattan. NYC is a great place for books in general, being a publishing center. Now I find my best books in Goodwill shops here in the DC area. In fact, that's likely what everyone in my family is getting this year.

Christmas is only good in the ways that it is good. Of course the rampant commercialism is awful. I veer away from that. I try to make gifts for people and focus on Christmas being an excuse to reunite with loved ones and friends. And to have the lovely tree and the joyous feast. If I can manage to be joyous... sometimes it ain't easy.

I'm in DC in January. Let me know if you make it here!

Why is it that I can't get anything done on Saturdays? I think my brain just refuses to function. Maybe I just need a day off after the Monday-Friday grind. Tomorrow I have to go for my Sunday run. I hate running. Now I'm trying to run four days a week. I also can't believe it's now December. I suspect that all my Christmas shopping...

When I'm Gone

There's no place in this world where I'll belong when I'm gone
And I won't know the right from the wrong when I'm gone
And you won't find me singin' on this song when I'm gone
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here

And I won't feel the flowing of the time when I'm gone
All the pleasures...

I've been listening to Phil Ochs a fair bit lately. Given our current foreign adventures I'm surprised there hasn't been a renewed interest in his work. I've also been wondering more and more about whether or not I'm actually accomplishing anything or just taking up space and being a good consumer.
