I promised myself last year that I would no longer watch the academy awards. I don't know how I got talked into it again this year.
Crash was quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. It was a contrived, caricature of a legitimate human condition. Admittedly, five minutes after i watched it, I thought it was good. Then, after all the shock wore off and I was able to digest it, I felt violated for being fooled into taking it seriously.
Brokeback Mountain was poorly edited, and boring. It was a far, far cry from the beauty, brilliance and emotion of The Ice Storm. In my head, I created my cut of the movie and the majority of the movie is spent in the mountain. It's narrated by the older daughter who is remembering her dead father through the letters they'd sent back and forth and the stories he'd shared with her. Instead of create any kind of legitimate gay awareness, this movie just created a new series of 'brokeback' gay jokes.
My feelings regarding Munich and Good Night, and Good Luck are the same. They are very well made, meaningful films. To me, Munich was more moving, but Good Night was technically more proficient.
Capote was obviously my favorite. It was the only one I would bother watching twice. But, I would never buy any of these to own. Capote was both well made and moving. Phillip Seymore Hoffman was amazing. Clifton Collins Jr. deserved a nomination. Catherine Keener was great as usual.
Crash? Seriously? I feel stupid for having waited to find that out. Though, being the cynic that I am, I had a feeling it would be crash. I'm a moron for watching the academy awards. I'm an even bigger moron for defecating my meaningless opinions in this little journal box.
To further beat a dead horse, I thought The Squid and The Whale was the best movie I saw all last year.
