i have a big fucking scab on my left knee.
in preparation for the big 120 mile bike ride my father and i had planned for yesterday and today, we went on a test-ride around the neighborhood to shake down the bike he just built me.
new bike = new parts. new parts include new tires. i have now, after 11 years of riding them, proven that you CAN fall off a recumbant bike if you slide off a curb.
enter the big fucking scab. or rather at the point of falling off the bike, the big fucking scrape. also earned was a right shin and knee of bruises, a series of bruises down my lower spine that highlights each vertebrae, and general soreness.
in good news, i didn't trash the new bike. and we made the first leg of the trip, about 65-70 miles between 7am and 1:30 pm yesterday. i was fine until about mile 55 when my energy stores just dropped out, and those last 20ish miles were utter hell. add to that all my bruises ripening, and the sad fact that i forgot to put sunblock on my scab after the bandaid fell off mid-trip. so now i have a big red burnt spot in the shape of a band-aid on my left knee, plus the oozy scab that is also burnt. and then a body full of sore muscles (even my jaws hurt) from depleting all my potassium stores.
yay me. so we skipped today's ride while my knee healed, with the added bonus that my dad can now get over the last bits of some intestinal bug he had last week. bad news is that now i'll have to find time off to finish the other 50-60 miles we'd planned to do today. and THAT part of the trip is pretty much uphill all the way. ugh. i should never have agreed to do this ride. ah well. dad's happy.
hope you're all well. i'm now going to spend this day of my vacation hobbling around and swearing.
