In general, I have a bizarre love of highly choreographed singing and dancing, so it was a little surprising to me that despite my affinity for musicals I'd never seen Singin' in the Rain until the past weekend. I had no idea it actually had a plot! And honestly, it only barely had a plot. My friend and I commented on the remarkable similarity between musicals and action films: in each, the story is really just a conveyor belt for a series of set pieces. At one point, I noticed Gene Kelly's smile and thought to myself that he must be an incredible actor; Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Conner all filmed one sequence for an entire day, from 8 AM until 11 PM, and by the end Reynolds' feet were bleeding. And still, they are all smiling. Now that is acting.
