Well today started out good, got all my snowblowing done, got some physio on my hand, had a good visit with my mom. Then I get news that a friend of mine, someone who just lost his younger brother a couple years ago(A very good friend of mine), someone I went to school with from the first day I moved to this town, a guy who has all the money a person could want, and enough stuff to make any guy jealous, has brain cancer and has been told he has about a year if he's lucky. This brings sharply into focus the fact that no matter how well off a person is, no matter what stuff they've managed to buy, no matter how indestructable we think we are at times, we could lose it all in a heartbeat by something we cannot control. So live everyday like it's your last, take your love in your arms and just hold them every chance you get, and appreciate what you have, don't dwell on what you don't.

Indeed, that's a good way (or at least, an intense way) of understanding that. Kinda helps you put everyone on the same level.
