my review of brand new's "Daisy"
i feel i should preface this review with a statement: i went and bought "Deja Entendu" in 2003, and yes, i fucking loved it.
there, now that we got that out of the way i feel i can continue and not feel like i am being unjustly judged. anyways, i think everyone loves "Deja Entendu", whether they still listen to it all the time now, or they listen to it every once in awhile, or they love it on nostalgia purposes alone. regardless, anyone that likes brand new LOVES "Deja Entendu" for one reason or another. in my opinon, however, after progressing far more than any other band in their category (a resounding "emo" at the time, with a good healthy dose of "pop/punk" still left over from their "Your Favorite Weapon" days) they needed to go in an even new direction for their followup album.
enter: "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me". brand new's masterpiece in this humble man's opinion. it was "Deja Entendu" on steroids, more angst, more creativity lyrically, much MUCH more instrumentation and experimentation. In all aspects, this was a much better album. so what next? well, for awhile it was rumored they'd broken up. then "fork and knife" surfaced and people thought that was what we'd be getting for the new sound. a decent single, a little repetitive for a brand new song though. and then we caught wind of "Daisy". and then we heard "at the bottom" we realized how amazing this new album could possibly be. and don't let me be mistaken: "Daisy" IS A GREAT ALBUM. it is obviously even more mature and experimental and thank god brand new has survived this long and NEVER ONCE become stale. "Daisy" is everything i thought it would be, heavier on all counts than "The Devil and God..." but not better than its predecessor. it falls short in a few places and definitely a WAY too short of a followup for such an amazing album.
overall: 85%
