New pic, still goofing with my camera.
John Rockwell proposes that Rock is cyclical...following a life-death cycle. He claims that, after Rock's birth in the 50's, it went through a youthful exhuberance, a maturing period (folk rock, Dylan, Acid Rock) and then grew old, corrupted and dead (Corporate Rock and especially Art Rock - Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, etc). Punk Rock ressurrected Rock and thus began a new cycle.
Many I talk to about this think Rock is dead today. But has it gone through another cycle? Was Punk the rebirth that we are now killing off? What about Hip-Hop? Was that a rebirth?
Hmm. Fun academic questions that really suck the life right out of music, wouldn't you say?
Interesting factoid of the day: Minor Threat 'legend' Jeff Nelson claims that the band listened to a lot of Journey and Fleetwood Mac as kids.
