I miss tapes. Magnetic cassettes. Memorex. I miss that. Mixing them. I used to daisy chain my VCR (wiki it) through my tuner and turntable into my tape deck so I could sample my collection of bad anime and old records onto mix tapes that would take hours of effort to compile and record. This isn't some kind of rant about the evils of iTunes or how everything was better back in the whatever but I do have particularly fond memories of putting those tapes together. Every single one of them was different and when they were finished I would make my own jacket art out of magazines and comic books before naming the label and sticking it on the cassette. I'd wrap them up after listening to them once and then give them to the lucky bastard or bird who I put them together for. It's hard to put love into a compact disc. I guess lasers just don't have a heart. Who knew. I'm going to head home now and dig up my closet; I've got to have at least one of them buried somewhere. Yeah, I made a couple for myself. I'm not a complete altruist.

There was a certain special magic to it, but the tapes were the size of books and not quite travel-sized. Still, sometimes I take them out and dust them off and wonder where the hell I can get my hands on a VCR.
