Oy. I wasted so much time this last week at work. I got a call from this lady on Monday who had brain damage from a car accident a while back but she was determined to finish her bachelor's degree. I told her about a promotion the school was running in which she wouldn't have to pay the application fee or book fee for her first class. In order to get that, she would have to get enrolled in the class starting next Tuesday and we would have to have all of her application and financial aid paperwork in by Friday.
Long story short, it didn't happen. I spent every day this week with her on the phone trying to help her get her stuff in. I kept telling her we needed to finish this. I asked her over and over to either borrow a cell phone or go to a friend's house where she could use the computer and phone at the same time since she only had one phone line. She wanted to do it all herself. I applaud her for that for wanting to overcome her disability but ultimately that and all of her demands on how she wanted to handle her own financial aid and grants instead of the school cost her a lot of time and she missed the deadline.
When I finally got a hold of her yesterday to tell her she would have to start class in August and pay the application and book fee, she got all kinds of upset. I told her I had been trying to get her to finish all week. I told her every day I was willing to stay late to help her finish but it still didn't happen. I put in so much time for this lady and it was all for naught. She then started going off on how the school was trying to take advantage of her to charge her these fees and how we're treating her differently because of her disability. That pissed me off. I told her I'm the least judgemental person she'd ever meet and how I put in so much time trying to help her. She said she did appreciate it but now she wants to get her lawyer involved and blah blah blah.
If nothing else, it was a good lesson in how people can end up screwing you after all the help they get. My manager also saw everything I was doing for her so I'm sure that scored me some points with him.
