Captain America #25. I'm sure you've all heard about this in the news. What is an interesting human interest piece to you all, however, is world-shattering news in my world of comics retail. One that will have repercussions for a long time.
Let me begin with a gentle "fuck you" to the media world for spoiling such a major comic event. Telling everyone what happened in that issue at the very start of New Comic Wednesday is equivalent to giving away the ending of a movie on opening day. No one that regularly reads comics was surprised by what happened because of you. Thanks. The fuck you is soft and sweet, though. It did bring a LOT of people into the shop, and that's where I get paid. It would have been nice if you could have waited a damn day. Perhaps this is why everyone is so underwhelmed by mainstream comics tanymore. They know what the hell is going to happen before it even does. Spoilers are pretty much destroying our appreciation of storytelling.
Now, a big thank you to the media world for making me a little more famous than I currently am. In the past, my comic book expertise has been used in a local Austin newscast about lesbian Batwoman, in silly Superman trivia widely viewed by patrons of Austin's very own Alamo Drafthouse theaters, and even to educate America's youth on the value of comics in our world today. I recently was interviewed by Wizard Magazine about our Stephen King's Dark Tower comic midnight release.
Today, Fair Game with Faith Salie contacted us at the shop looking for someone who was knew a scary amount about Captain America and ready to talk about the recent events surrounding him. Always eager to get my name out there as America's Foremost Expert on Comics, I offered myself up. They asked if I would be around all day. Of course, I'm there all day, every day. They said they'd call back, and they did, letting me know Faith would be calling at 1 our time. This was when I looked up the show and found out it was national. Sweet. My influence spreads.
After some quick boning up on my Captain America trivia, just in case it would be needed, Faith called at 1 as they had promised. It's easy for media types to pick fun at comic types, and my goal was to be charming, amusing, intelligent, and to basically wow the shit out of a nation. I applaud Faith, a known comedian, for never once taking the easy potshot route. She was all class, and I really feel I kung fu'ed the shit out of the interview. It will air this Friday night. You'll probably have to check your local listings (available at the above link) if you want to hear me on actual nationwide public radio. Even if your affiliate doesn't carry the show, or you have plans, they post the show as a podcast to listen to at your convenience. So yeah, you have to listen. My part is probably about 15 minutes, but you should enjoy the whole show!
So, what do i have to say about the events of Captain America #25?
You'll just have to listen to find out. If you do listen to it, and are interested in hearing more on what I have to say about all comics, I do a weekly comics podcast called Staple Pop. It's the second friend on my Myspace Top Friends list. Make it (and me?) your friend, listen to us, and leave comments or suggestions. if you're not at all interested in comics, or me ripping on my cohost, you might want to skip it. This week's episode will go very indepth on Captain America and the kitty cat he saved.
Thanks again go to Faith Saile for being completely cool and not trying to make me sound like a dork. It wouldn't have worked anyways, for I am a Verbal Atomic Bomb.
You'll note, friends, that I got through this whole blog without saying what exactly happens in this important issue, and I bet you're still interested in it. Take that, CNN.
Of course, you probably already know anyways.
Next blog: A Manifesto.
