One day and some change left in 2006. I gotta say, it's been a darn sight better than many other recent years, professionally, politically, personally.
One thing I especially love about this time of year is top 10 best/worst lists. Unfortunately, my memory's crap and I can never remember when things happened. (Case in point: I just screwed myself on my insurance deductible because I couldn't remember that I had back X-rays in 2005, not 2006!) But still, here are some things I really liked in 2006:
My XM radio - Xmas present from last year, but enjoyed it all through this one. Especially the Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour. Ever wanted Bob Dylan to teach you the history of popular music in America? There you go.
Election night - Democrats retake the House and ultimately the Senate; severally of the most execrable Republicans in congress go home without consolation prizes; my local candidates for state rep, state senate, and U.S. Senate all win. Best election since '92!
Marrying... my friends as an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church.
Canada - specifically Ottawa, which threw so much business my wife's way that I got to spend a week up there on vacation this summer.
Got tenure? - I do! Now I have some protection in case our state legislature reverts to its... less enlightened form of the previous 4 years.
TV - What would life be without the Daily Show and, now more than ever, The Colbert Report? Not to mention maybe best seasons ever for 24 and Battlestar Galactica? While we're at it, let's top it off with My Name is Earl and The Office. Am I amused? Yes, yes I am.
Movies - Maybe it's my memory, but I can't really think of any that stood out with the exception of "Casino Royale" - which got even better on the second viewing! It's so good it's hard to look at other Bonds the same, and I like many of the other Bonds. "The Prestige" would have probably been my favoritie, except that it never came here and I didn't see it.
[Edited on Jan 1] Alright, reading other lists, I'm going to add "Borat" and "Little Miss Sunshine" to movies I'll actually remember next year. But that's still a pretty paltry bunch all things considered.
That's a short list. What would any of you add?
