My wife was a lab tech for a research lab for a bit - which is obviously different than what you're up to, but I'm betting *existentially* similar. She came to really loathe it - it was just too lonely. So she headed back to school. But after an MA, she was more interested in professional school, and is now getting a PharmD.
This is probably far into the realm of TMI, but a hilarious conversation that must be shared.
