Recently I decided to upgrade my desktop PC, so the onboard graphics card, an older Radeon HD, just got a new buddy: EVGA's single slot version of the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640, featuring 4GB of DDR3 RAM. The fan's loudness on its high frequency can be quite annoying to some people, but I'm still very happy with it. That combination might not sound very convenient to some of you. I like experiments though. Oh, and I'm all but a gamer - it's all for fun and coding. :)
Running Gentoo Linux on the system, I'm only using (almost) bleeding edge software, even configuring the whole kernel myself based on init_6's geek sources. I've added the open source nouveau drivers to my kernel, but apparently only the "traditional" way of configuring Xorg works for now - Xinerama. I'd love to use RandR, but I couldn't seem to figure out how to forward both cards to work with it. Only one at a time showed up.
A little more on that: Configuring Xorg should nowadays not need to be done manually because it would detect everything automatically, but not for me, yay! So I wrote some xorg.conf.d rule files, happily enjoying the great documentation in the Arch Linux wiki. I somewhat succeeded to set up a server layout, screens and monitors besides the devices.
Now it's my 1920x1080 screen plus a 1024x768 one attached to its right for testing. Later on I will be using two 1080p screens for a nice panorama view. You wouldn't believe how beautiful that'd look to a geek's eyes - a 3840x1080 terminal or code viewer. Then I could write loooooong long one-liners! xD
I've wanted to post a screenshot btw, but the (new) SG website didn't want it - it still has its bugs. :/ I'll add it asap!
