What is it about old, derelict buildings?
My morning commute to work every day takes me through the forgotten, decayed parts of downtown Canton. I have to get up at an unholy hour every day, and the streets are almost totally deserted, no cars - no humans, for the entire trip.
And every day I will notice these old buildings standing there in the dark. A lot of them have faded, advertisements on the sides ... a good number of these are indecipherable now but one in particular is quite legible as an old ad for Squirt.
But I will just sit there at red lights and mull at these buildings sometimes. There just seems to be a lingering sadness over them - over that entire area even. The feeling is all the more pronounced given the deserted streets and dark winter nights. I guess it's just me being my hopeless romantic self - trying to project human emotions and consciousness onto things. I imagine it all sounds rather stupid ... Either that or everyone else sees them the same way as I do - especially those people who remember downtown Canton as the bustling social center it once was.
Maybe I just need to get a new job ...
