I volunteer at a local animal shelter here in Austin TX. I help feed them, clean their bowls and do laundry for fresh bedding. I have two myself. I do this because I have come to the realization that we humans have a responsibility for what we help to create. We did this and we are destroying them by the thousands because a lot of us feel that they are just pieces of furniture that fit our lifestyle and then dispose of them when we are bored. I have come to learn that many shelters that advertise "no Kill" is a lie. they twist the truth. No means NO. Not 90% or being selective so they can maintain a reputation. NO MEANS NO!
I know of one dog that fate hangs in the balance and I want to go to his kennel and be with him till his fate is carelessly decided. Let him know that he is not forgotten and that he is not alone. They are all apart of me in some small way. siting in silence. Surrounded by four concrete walls and a ragged blanket. Sniffing the air for something familiar. Staring out to an open sky. Maybe longing for touch. Another close comfort. Security. Food. Companionship. Running and playing. Sniffing the world around me.
I don't want to let them down.....
